As a new mum, it can be hard to find the inspiration or motivation to get out your pyjamas, let alone out of the house. But, not only will getting out and about with your bub do wonders for your mental health (cabin fever, are we right?), it’s incredibly important in order to important to kick-start your new routine as a mumma.
Thanks to a heap of insight from the mums in our lives, the Livvy and Harry team has compiled the ultimate tried–and-tested list of simple ways to venture out of the house with your bub. If trying to wrangle a screaming bub while ‘enjoying’ lunch in a bustling café sounds like hell on earth, and the thought of a family holiday with a little one strapped to your chest is going straight in the ‘too hard basket’, this list is for you.
Laze in the shade
Grab your baby bag and pack the essentials, then add a good book, some snacks and a soft blanket, and head to your local park. You’d be surprised how blissful it is to stretch out on a blanket amongst nature and read in the shade while bub dozes in the pram. Keep it simple
Lace up your sneakers, strap bub into the stroller and hit the pavement – walking not only releases endorphins and helps to clear your mind, but is a great way to settle an irritable baby and get some incidental exercise! Dine in the comfort of your own home
Can’t quite face the world? One of the perks of being a new mum, besides the fact that you now have a really cute miniature human, is that your family and friends are all eager to stop by, cook for you and help out at all times.
Taking bub to a restaurant can be tricky, but your dining room can be transformed into an instant restaurant in a few simple steps:
- Invite your nearest and dearest around for dinner, and ask everyone to bring a plate.
- Pop up some fairy lights and light a few candles, and set out some plates and cutlery.
- Swap your robe for normal clothes (or don’t, we’re not judging)
- Sit back, relax and enjoy a delicious dinner, while baby snoozes nearby and you get to pretend you’re dining out.
Spending time with your loved ones, eating delicious food that you didn’t cook, with no travel or effort required? There are too many positives to name.
Organise a day trip
Feeling adventurous? Do a bit of research and create a list of locations within a few hours’ drive of your house. Pack your baby bag with plenty of nappies and wet wipes, clip bub into the car and hit the road – this is a great opportunity for a simple family adventure or a bit of one-on-one bonding time with your baby.
When you arrive at your destination, go for a walk along the river, eat your lunch in a public garden, explore a museum or walk around the town - the options are endless and the change of scenery will do wonders! When bub starts to grizzle and you’re ready to be wrapped in a blanket watching repeats of Grey’s Anatomy again, head home - trust us, when you get home, you’ll be feeling pretty damn smug!
